What is 3D laser scanning (otherwise known as 3D imaging)?
3D laser scanning is a device that digitizes shapes and objects from the real world into a virtual CAD environment. Even though each type of scanner is different, all laser scanners emit their own light, unlike a camera that only receives light. Because of this, they can measure long distances with high accuracies, and can even work in the dark. The scanner sits on a tripod and an operator initiates a scan. The device rotates and scans across the entire space to get a panoramic image. Each pixel on the resultant panoramic image contains an x, y and z value. The scanner can record millions of pixels in a single scan. Together, these pixels, or points, are known as a point cloud. Point clouds are then imported to special software that can convert those raw scans into CAD objects.

How accurate is a laser scanner?
Devices vary, but McKim & Creed’s static terrestrial-based systems are within 5mm positional accuracy. This combines the errors from the hardware, instrument setup and other random and statistical errors present, along with environmental factors. Our laser scanning project managers can answer your questions, should your measurement task require higher accuracy.

How much does laser scanning cost?
Project managers typically estimate scan projects by the entire scope of what is involved. The cost depends on the amount of data collected, the effort needed to acquire it and the time required to produce your deliverable. It is sometimes difficult to estimate a per-hour rate, or a cost per linear foot/mile or by square footage because each project has its own particular variables; plant project vs. street intersection, for example. If a project manager recommends scanning for your project, then it most likely will save you money—possibly 60% or more vs. conventional land surveying. It is often the safest or most timely method to accomplish the task.
