History

In 1978, Herb McKim and Mike Creed joined forces to provide exceptional engineering consulting services.

Since then, the partnership has since grown into one of the top engineering, design and geomatics firms in the country, with offices throughout the south. Providing innovative services worldwide, McKim & Creed is consistently recognized for our integrity, customer focus and award-winning projects.

1978-1980

  • Herb McKim, Jr. and Michael Creed established a partnership on June 1, 1978 in Wilmington, North Carolina, providing structural engineering consulting services.
  • Hired first employee.

1980-1982

  • Expanded services to include civil engineering, environmental engineering and surveying services.
  • Number of employees grew to 30.

1983-1985

  • Relocated Wilmington operations to its current location, the former J.C. Penney store and site of the historic Bijou Theater.
  • Staff size expanded to 30.

1986-1988

  • Awarded McKim & Creed’s first large development project—Governor’s Club, a 1,600-acre golf community in Chatham County, North Carolina.
  • Added landscape architecture services.

1989-1991

  • Staff size surpassed 100.
  • Acquired Ragsdale Consultants and established office in Raleigh, North Carolina.

1992-1994

  • Acquired Briley, Wild & Associates in Daytona Beach and Clearwater, Florida, and established first offices outside North Carolina.
  • Established office in Charlotte, North Carolina.

1995-1997

  • Added GPS services.
  • Began establishing formal partnering relationships with clients.
  • Expanded water modeling services.
  • Added hydrographic surveying services.
  • Expanded surveying services into Florida.

1998-2000

  • Expanded services into Virginia.
  • Launched first website.
  • Added GIS services.

2001-2003

  • Added subsurface utility engineering (SUE) services.
  • Formed North Carolina Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s first corporate marathon team, raised $150,000 for cancer research, and participated in the Mayor’s Midnight Sun Marathon and Half Marathon on Anchorage, Alaska.

2004-2006

  • Honored in a special ceremony by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, for responsiveness, commitment, and dedication.
  • Became a title sponsor of a documentary on water scarcity produced by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
  • Included on ZweigWhite’s “Hot Firms” listing of the 100 fastest growing engineering, architectural and environmental firms in America.
  • Added laser scanning services.

2007-2009

  • Established $100,000 McKim & Creed Scholarship for Excellence with Professional Engineers of North Carolina.
  • Established MoDaC Mobile Data Collection® services.
  • Opened office in Tampa, Florida to provide engineering and geomatics services.
  • Expanded water reuse services.
  • Celebrated 30th anniversary with a focus on community service activities.
  • Acquired Brock Design Group and began providing engineering services in Georgia.

2010-2012

  • Acquired SURVCON and grew geomatics services in Texas with offices in Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio.
  • Expanded remote sensing services and added aerial LiDAR.
  • Established DeLand, Florida office, specializing in geomatics services.
  • Three employees hiked Pikes Peak to raise money for Water For People.
  • Added buried infrastructure renewal and replacement services.

2013-2015

  • John Lucey, PE, named president and CEO of McKim & Creed.
  • Added mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection services with the acquisition of United Engineering Group.
  • Expanded engineering services in Georgia and established Atlanta office.
  • Named 2014 FL-APWA Water/Wastewater Consultant of the Year.
  • Expanded energy services to include efficiency improvements and sustainable projects.
