Creating a Smarter Smart Grid For Energy and Water

Our current focus on the energy 'smart grid' is long overdue, but a similar situation with our water systems is just around the corner. The paths to modernize the electric grid and the water grid are well aligned and share common technologies, but advances in water and wastewater treatment, water reuse, and water conservation cannot contradict the advances we're working toward in the energy sector. Expanding the green reformation and converging efficiencies in both energy and water can create a smarter 'smart grid.'

Ground water accounts for two-thirds of the earth's available water supply. About nine out of 10 public water systems depend on ground water to provide water for their customers. In some areas of the United States, ground water is being withdrawn faster than the aquifers can recharge. This seriously jeopardizes the availability of future water resources.
