Setting World Records, One Survey at a Time

It's every five year old boy's dream - the world's longest model railroad! On Saturday, April 23, the model railroaders of the Wilmington (N.C.) Railroad Museum set a world record for running the longest model train. McKim & Creed surveyors provided the measurements that will document the event in the Guinness World Records®. The record to beat was set in Hamburg, Germany in 2008. To qualify for new world record, Wilmington's train had to exceed 892 feet, 3 inches in length, and travel at least 630 feet without assistance and under its own power. Want to see how they did it?

Precise engineering and creative design saves money and reduces public disruption

The City of Raleigh, a utility that provides water and wastewater services to over 450,000 people, had a strong desire to find the most effective, reliable and economical solution to sanitary sewer overflows and infiltration/inflow. This led them away from the construction of a pump station and equalization basin with a very long force main. Officials recognized that this scenario, slated for a highly developed area, could become a public nuisance and may not be as effective in reducing the risk of an SSO as a gravity sewer alternative. The project team completed a study that resulted in gravity sewer alternative. The gravity sewer solution presented a new set of engineering challenges, requiring a high level of above- and below-ground survey and SUE, further supported by environmental investigations.
