Joe Stowe to Receive WEF's Emerson Award

Joe Stowe, a senior management consultant with McKim & Creed, has been selected to receive the prestigious Emerson Distinguished Service Award from the Water Environment Federation.

The award will be presented on October 4 at WEF’s national conference in New Orleans.The Emerson Award is presented to the WEF member whose contributions to the water environment profession most deserve recognition. The award commemorates the service of WEF’s first president, Charles Alvin Emerson, who served from 1928 to 1941. WEF has 36,000 members worldwide.

According to a news release issued by WEF, Joe is receiving the award “for his contributions in promoting and improving the standards of the water environment through his professional accomplishment, and his exceptional leadership in WEF and in the NC American Water Works Association – Water Environment Association.”

Joe has nearly 50 years’ experience in the water environment industry. He began his career as a water treatment operator, and later became director of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities. He now serves as a senior management consultant with McKim & Creed, where he specializes in resource management for utility operations optimization.

Joe is a life member and past president of WEF, a life member of AWWA and the North Carolina Water Works Operators Association, and a board member of Water for People.

Geomatics Manager Appointed to International Committee

Julie McDonald, PE, PLS, a Geomatics office manager with McKim & Creed in Charlotte, has been appointed vice chair of the International Right of Way Association’s Surveying and Engineering Committee. The appointment was announced at the IRWA Annual Conference, which was held in Calgary June 27-30.

The mission of the International Right of Way Surveying and Engineering Committee is to provide advice and assistance on issues related to the survey of real property or interests in property for right-of-way purposes. The committee monitors legislation, concepts, practices and procedures that relate to surveying real property and rights of way for public or private use, and the subsequent construction on affected parcels.

As vice chair of the committee, McDonald will coordinate meeting agendas and minutes, review and update the committee’s strategic plan, and help ensure that the committee is achieving its mission.

McDonald has been a member of the IRWA since 2008. As a Geomatics office manager with McKim & Creed, she supervises 30 crew members and oversees multiple surveying projects, including such projects as the CATS North Corridor Light Rail project, construction surveying for the NASCAR Hall of Fame, McAlpine Creek Greenway, and gas line relocating services for Piedmont Natural Gas.

McKim & Creed Selected for Coal-to-Gas Conversion Projects

Piedmont Natural Gas has selected McKim & Creed to provide surveying services for approximately 168 miles of transmission pipeline that will be built to expand power facilities near Wilmington and Goldsboro and to convert significant portions of the plants’ capacities from coal to natural gas.

In April, Piedmont announced a partnership with Progress Energy Carolinas to provide natural gas delivery service to Progress Energy’s Sutton and Lee power generation facilities. Converting the coal-fired operations to natural gas will significantly increase generation capacity while reducing overall emissions at both facilities. At the Sutton site near Wilmington, approximately 133 miles of transmission line and 23,000 HP of compression facilities will be built to serve a new 620-megawatt combined-cycle facility. At the Lee plant near Goldsboro, nearly 40 miles of transmission line will be installed.

McKim & Creed, one of the largest engineering, surveying and planning firms headquartered in North Carolina, will provide surveying, easement mapping, permitting, erosion control and project management services for the two projects. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2011.

“These projects will bring significant environmental and economic improvements to eastern North Carolina, and we appreciate the opportunity to be involved,” said Herbert P. McKim, Jr., PE, PLS, president and chief operating officer of McKim & Creed.

In 2006, McKim & Creed provided surveying services to Piedmont Natural Gas for approximately 400 miles of transmission line that brought natural gas to 14 rural counties. The project earned McKim & Creed a Grand Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina.

Jaynes Wins International Award for Third Consecutive Year

Amy Jaynes, CST I, a senior survey CAD technician with McKim & Creed, has won first place in the “Utility” category of the International Right of Way Association’s Annual Surveying and Mapping Competition. This is the third consecutive year Jaynes has won the international award.

The award will be presented at the Annual IRWA Education Foundation on June 27 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Jaynes’ work is eligible for the “Best of Show” award, which will be selected by IRWA members through internet voting.

Jaynes created the award-winning map, which features a right of way acquisition and release, for Duke Energy.

As a senior survey CAD technician with McKim & Creed, Jaynes specializes in utility surveying and mapping for projects in North and South Carolina. She has been with McKim & Creed since 2007.

Charlotte Office Earns National Fit-Friendly Certification

The American Heart Association has named the Charlotte office of McKim & Creed a gold-tier Fit-Friendly Company.

AHA’s Fit-Friendly program recognizes companies that foster a healthy lifestyle among their employees. Approximately 1,100 companies across the U.S. have earned the certification.

To earn the Fit-Friendly status, McKim & Creed’s Charlotte office had to meet AMA wellness standards on three fronts: promoting physical activity, encouraging nutritious eating habits, and developing a culture that is aware of and prioritizes wellness. The company has encouraged use of the office’s basketball goal and the nearby McAlpine Greenway, and has incorporated stretch breaks into the workday. Heart-healthy meal options are now offered at all company-sponsored meals, and the employee break room is stocked with healthy snacks at a reduced cost. Employees receive weekly e-mails featuring nutrition tips, healthy recipes and stretching techniques, and a Fit-Friendly Day is being planned that will include therapeutic massage, blood pressure checks and weight loss advice.

Butner Greenway Project Awarded

The town of Butner, N.C., has selected the team of Greenways, Inc. and McKim & Creed to design and engineer the East Lyon Station Road Greenway Corridor.

The town was awarded a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Program Grant from NCDOT to build a ~ .75-mile long, 10-ft. wide greenway along the western side of East Lyon Station Road. As a consultant to Greenways, Inc., McKim & Creed will provide surveying and engineering services for the project.

This is the first greenway constructed by the town of Butner. Ultimately, it will provide connections to other greenways planned for the area, including the Granville County Spur of the “Hike and Bike.” The “Hike and Bike” is intended to be a three-mile trail that begins at the end of the East Lyon Station Road Greenway Connector.

According to the Request for Proposals, town officials hope to point to this project “as the beginning of new pedestrian access and changes in how the citizens get from place to place.”

Urban River Restoration 2010 Conference

McKim & Creed Selected for USACE Contract in Northeast

A team led by McKim & Creed has been selected by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, to provide surveying and mapping services in the northeastern U.S.

The indefinite quantity contract encompasses hydrographic and topographic services on an as-needed basis in the Corps’ North Atlantic Division, which includes 14 states from Maine to Virginia and Washington, DC. Task orders included in the contract may be funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The life of the contract is three years.

Firms were evaluated, in part, on their specialized experience and technical competence, ability to provide a full range of surveying and mapping services within the North Atlantic Division, capacity to furnish sufficient staff and equipment to effectively perform at least two task orders simultaneously, past performance, and knowledge of the general geographic area.

Since 1992, McKim & Creed has provided services for nearly 250 individual projects and annual contracts for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Included on McKim & Creed’s team are Hartmann & Associates (Pittsburgh, Pa.), providing quality assurance/quality control; 3001 International, Inc. (Peachtree City, Ga.), furnishing photogrammetry services; Kaya Associates (Huntsville, Ala.) for GIS mapping; and Blom Aerofilms (United Kingdom) administering hydrographic LiDAR.

Joe Stowe Named WEF Life Member

Joe Stowe, senior management consultant with McKim & Creed, has been named a life member of the Water Environment Federation (WEF).

WEF is a not-for-profit association that provides technical education and training for water quality professionals. Life members are professionals who have been active in WEF for at least 35 years.

Stowe, who served as the national president of WEF in 2000-01, has also earned life membership in the American Water Works Association and the North Carolina Waterworks Operators Association.

At McKim & Creed, Stowe provides water and wastewater management consultation to municipalities. He formerly served as the Charlotte-Mecklenburg director of utilities, and joined McKim & Creed in 2008.

Grand Award Presented for Florida Project

McKim & Creed has received a Grand Award for engineering excellence from the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers, and is one of six firms being considered for FICE’s top honor, the Grand Conceptor Award.

McKim & Creed won the award for its work on the Lake Manatee Water Treatment Plant Pilot Study. The project involved a seven-month pilot study that evaluated various water treatment options to address Manatee County’s concerns, which included taste and odor issues, challenges in meeting regulatory requirements due to seasonal turbidity excursions, the likelihood of more stringent regulatory requirements, and the operation and maintenance costs required to address these issues. Additionally, the Lake Manatee facility is the county’s only drinking water facility, and is located within the Southern Water Use Caution Area, which limits water withdrawals in the region; thus, treatment loss minimization is essential in implementing improvements.

In a report that outlined the results of the study, McKim & Creed recommended that Manatee County retrofit existing multi-media filters to submerged ultrafiltration—something that has never been done in Florida and that, if constructed, would be the largest project of its kind implemented to date in North America.

The judges for the FICE Engineering Excellence Awards represented government, media and transportation, as well as the Florida Department of Transportation and the American Institute of Architects. Six Grand Awards were given, and the winner of FICE’s highest honor, the Grand Conceptor Award, will be selected from those six winners. The Grand Conceptor Award winner will be announced at the FICE Awards Banquet in August 2010.

Last month, McKim & Creed won the Grand Conceptor Award in North Carolina for its work with mobile scanning projects.

Safrit Joins Environmental Policy Committee

Don Safrit, PE, senior technical specialist with McKim & Creed, has been invited to serve on the N.C. Chamber Environmental Concerns Policy Committee. In that capacity, he will help shape the state’s environmental policy agenda.

The committee focuses its work and attention on statewide environmental issues that are vital to the success of the business community in North Carolina.

Don has more than 25 years of experience in water quality engineering, including 13 years with the North Carolina Division of Water Quality (NC-DWQ). He joined McKim & Creed in 2007.

MoDaC� Mobile Data Collection Featured

The November edition of Florida Specifier magazine features McKim & Creed’s MoDaC™ Mobile Data Collection system.

In an article titled “Mobile Scanning Expected to Alter Survey Business Landscape,” McKim & Creed’s Tim Van Gelder, PLS, said he believes that mobile scanning technology even tops the introduction of GPS to surveying.

Top Honor for Engineering Excellence Presented to McKim & Creed

McKim & Creed has received the top honor for engineering excellence by the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina.

The engineering, surveying and planning firm was presented the “2010 Henry A. Stikes Grand Conceptor Award” for its use of cutting-edge mobile scanning technology along five sections of roadway and three sections of railway in “Mobile Scanning Projects” throughout North Carolina. The top honor was presented to company officials at the ACEC/NC’s annual awards gala held in Cary on Tuesday evening, November 10, and marks the second time in three years that McKim & Creed has won the Grand Conceptor Award.

ACEC/NC annually presents the “Engineering Excellence Awards” to honor and recognize engineering and surveying firms located in North Carolina for projects that demonstrate the highest degree of achievement, value and ingenuity.

McKim & Creed also received “Honors Awards” from ACEC/NC for its work on the James A. Loughlin (Northside) Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion and Upgrade in Wilmington and the North Carolina Center for Automotive Research (NCCAR) Phase 1A in Northampton County. The company won the most awards of any single firm in the awards competition.

For the mobile scanning projects, McKim & Creed and Terrapoint used mobile scanning technology to gather topographic and planimetric data for more than 50 miles of highway and 33 miles of railway in North Carolina. This marked the first time mobile scanning had been used in North Carolina for DOT. The data was mapped into CAD deliverables, which NCDOT used for design purposes on five sections of highway and three areas of railway. By our estimations, this method of data collection can potentially save 30% on costs when compared to helicopter photogrammetry. Data collection time is drastically reduced proportionally to the size of the project.

The Northside facility, which is one of the largest construction projects in the history of Wilmington and New Hanover County, doubled wastewater treatment capacity, replaced chlorination with ultraviolet disinfection and was completed for $6 million under budget with no lost manhours during construction. McKim & Creed, with subconsultants Hazen and Sawyer and Tetra Tech, designed the $80-million expansion and upgrade of the Northside Wastewater Treatment Plant. Capacity was increased from 8 mgd to 16 mgd, with the capability of expanding to 24 mgd, which will serve the needs of city and county residents for 30 years. The plant remained operational during the three-year construction period.

NCCAR is the only facility on the East Coast designed to meet research, testing and development demands of the automotive industry. Located in Northampton County, NCCAR includes road courses, test pads and high-tech garages, and provides the tools needed to test any kind of road vehicle. Within 3-5 years, the state-sponsored project is estimated to bring 50-150 jobs to an economically depressed area. Its affiliation with North Carolina’s university and community college system offers opportunities for matching talents with research capacity and business development resources.

The awards gala was held Tuesday, November 10 at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, North Carolina.

Les Hall Receives Governor Appointment

William L. (Les) Hall, Jr., PE, F.NSPE, executive vice president with McKim & Creed, has been appointed by Governor Bev Perdue to serve on the North Carolina Environmental Management Commission.

The commission is a 19-member group that is responsible for adopting rules to protect, preserve and enhance North Carolina’s air and water resources. Commission members represent various interests, including the medical profession, engineering, agriculture, fish and wildlife, groundwater, air and water pollution control, municipal or county government, and the public at large.

Hall is a civil engineer with nearly 40 years’ experience. This fall he began a phased retirement from McKim & Creed. He joined the engineering, surveying and planning firm in 1984 and most recently led the company's infrastructure and environmental services. Currently, he oversees client development and major projects for McKim & Creed. “While Les is working less time with McKim & Creed, he is giving more to his profession and the industry than ever before,” says McKim & Creed Chairman & CEO Michael W. Creed, PE. “He will be a valuable addition to the Environmental Management Commission.”

Hall currently chairs the North Carolina American Water Works Association-Water Environment Association, and is a Fellow in the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Professional Engineers of North Carolina. He has chaired the Wake County Environmental Services Committee, and has served as president of PENC, as a director of the Water Environment Federation, and on the Governor’s State Infrastructure Council.

MoDaC� Mobile Data Collection System Launched

McKim & Creed has launched MoDaC™, a state-of-the-art mobile data collection system that features the OpTech LYNX™ mobile scanner and makes McKim & Creed one of the few firms on the East Coast to offer turnkey mobile scanning services.

Mobile scanning combines 3-D laser scanning, GPS, inertial measurement and video technologies. Multiple scanners are mounted on an SUV or on a rail truck. These scanners collect dense and accurate 360-degree data while the vehicle travels at posted speeds. The data is used for design, modeling and simulation in 2-D, 3-D and 4-D formats.

Mobile scanning is most applicable for large transportation projects that encompass more than one mile, require normal design accuracies (less than ½-inch tolerance), have tight deadlines, involve heavily traveled or potentially dangerous areas, and can benefit from the addition of video imagery for feature collection and presentation purposes. MoDaC is McKim & Creed’s trademarked name for its mobile data collection services.

“MoDaC allows us to offer a unique service to our clients that is safer, faster and more cost effective than many traditional surveying methods,” says Marty Stoughton, PLS, McKim & Creed’s director of business development for mobile scanning. “Because mobile scanning is such a new technology, and because it offers such clear imagery, we continue to see new applications each and every day.”

MoDaC offers considerable benefits. It is significantly less expensive than traditional helicopter photogrammetry. Data collection is much faster. Massive amounts of data can be collected while traveling at posted speeds, and surveyors can collect up to 400,000 points per second as compared to one point every few seconds with traditional surveying. With fewer personnel working beside busy roadways, mobile scanning creates a safer job site. The likelihood of bad-weather delays is reduced due to shortened data collection time. Because the data is collected from a moving vehicle, mobile scanning does not impede traffic flow. And the dense data that is collected lends itself to future data extraction without additional field visits.

Prior to investing in mobile scanning technology, McKim & Creed compared mobile scanning with static scanning on a three-mile test site. Two crews worked for one week to collect the data using static scanning. With mobile scanning, the data was collected in less than half a day.

McKim & Creed has completed eight projects for NCDOT—five roadway projects and three railroad projects—using mobile scanning, marking the first time NCDOT has used this technology.

McKim & Creed’s MoDaC system will be showcased at the ACEC/NC/DOT Transportation Conference on October 14 at the McKimmon Center in Raleigh, N.C.

McKim & Creed has launched its second video on YouTube. The video, which features hydrographic surveying services, is located at www.youtube.com/mckimcreed and http://hydrographic-surveying.mckimcreed.com/. Also located on YouTube is a video on subsurface utility engineering, or SUE.

Hydrographic surveying is the process of measuring and mapping beaches, shorelines and navigable bodies of water. McKim & Creed’s hydrographic surveyors have completed projects from the Eastern Seaboard to the Caribbean to the Northwest Territories of Canada.

Other videos currently in production by McKim & Creed feature 3-D laser imaging, mobile scanning and resource management.

SUE Video Launched on YouTube

McKim & Creed has launched the first in a series of videos on the popular video-sharing Web site YouTube. The video is located at www.youtube.com/mckimcreed and http://subsurface-utility-engineering.mckimcreed.com.

The video focuses on subsurface utility engineering (SUE), an engineering practice that uses nondestructive geophysical investigating techniques to verify the existence, condition and exact location of underground utilities. Featured is a recent project in which SUE specialists used vacuum excavation to locate underground utilities in historic downtown Savannah, Georgia. The specialists dug 50 test holes and, at each hole, located the width, material type, condition, depth, number, elevation and horizontal position of underground utilities. After the data was collected, the holes were backfilled with the original material and the historic cobblestone was replaced, leaving no trace of excavation.

McKim & Creed Ranked Among Top Firms

Engineering News-Record and Public Works magazines have once again ranked McKim & Creed among the top firms in the U.S.

In its August 3 issue, ENR listed the company #162 among the top 200 environmental firms in the country. Public Works, in its July edition, included McKim & Creed among an unranked list of the leading AEC firms that work in the public sector.

ENR ranks companies based on gross revenue reported for the previous year for providing environmental services and products. Public Works lists firms based on revenue and areas of expertise.

McKim & Creed has been included on ENR’s top environmental firms listing for nine out of the past 10 years, and has been ranked by Public Works since 2005.

Integrating Water Reuse Into Sustainability

Tuesday, July 28, 12:00 noon: Don Safrit will discuss integrating water reuse into sustainability at a luncheon sponsored by AIA Charlotte. Don will cover a general understanding of water reuse, why it is important to recycle water, the challenges of recycling water, LEED certification, NC Legislation, and more.

LEED Accreditations, PE Licenses Earned

McKim & Creed is pleased to announce that Mark Smith, PE; Curt Blazier, PE; Dale Hyatt, EI; Jonathan Smith, PE, CPSWQ, CPESC; and James Lyon, PE have earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Professional Accreditations from the Green Building Certification Institute.

In addition, Deric Barnes and Kelly Ham have received their Professional Engineer licenses from the N.C. Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Mark Smith is McKim & Creed’s national director of planning and land development. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University and joined McKim & Creed in 2005.

Blazier is a project engineer who came to McKim & Creed in 2005. He is a graduate of Virginia Tech.

Hyatt, an engineer intern, is a graduate of North Carolina State University who came to McKim & Creed in 2006. J

onathan Smith is a project manager. He graduated from North Carolina State University and joined McKim & Creed in 2006.

Lyon is a civil engineer and a graduate of the University of Tennessee. He has been with McKim & Creed since 1999.
