The $3-million Kings Bluff intake project boosts raw water capacity from 45 mgd to 127.5 mgd, enabling the Lower Cape Fear Water and Sewer Authority to provide a sustainable, drought-resistant supply for customers for the next 30 years. This was the Authority’s second stimulus project funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and involved both subaqueous and sub-terrain construction. The team installed 1,200 linear feet of 60-inch ductile iron pipe and three 54-inch intake screens, each rated at 27.5 mgd, below the Cape Fear River. The team finished 10 days ahead of schedule and $50,000 below budget.
