Duke Energy uses its Standby Nuclear Service Water Pond at the McGuire Nuclear Station as an emergency water supply for nuclear reactor cooling. To provide required volume computations, McKim & Creed performed topographic and hydrographic surveys of the lake. Surveyors used high frequency (200hHz) single-beam sonar for the hydrographic survey. Trimble DGPS provided horizontal positioning. A tab delimited .ASC file was imported into AutoCAD, and volume calculations were performed in digital terrain models.
