In an age of rising insurance costs, Avenu Health offers a different approach to healthcare. An affiliate of Mission in Asheville, North Carolina, Avenu Health does not accept insurance. Instead, the primary healthcare provider utilizes a membership model similar to a health club. By paying a fee of $50-$70 per month, members get up to 40 in-person office visits, 24/7 access to a family care physician and lab work. It helps those without health insurance or those with high deductibles afford health care, according to a WLOS-TV news article.
McKim & Creed’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) engineers helped renovate the 3,750-SF space that is home to Avenu’s family practice clinic. The facility includes six exam rooms, an X-ray room, a procedure room, a teaching kitchen, a lab and a waiting room.
The MEP design team placed a great deal of attention on indoor comfort, ranging from thermally activated variable air volume (VAV) diffusers to a state-of-the-art lighting system. The improvements engineered by McKim & Creed make the space so comfortable and inviting that “we are hearing reactions from our clients that include: ‘I feel like I’m in a spa,’” according to Ben Aiken, MD, MSPH and a member of the Avenu Health team.
The facility, designed by McMillan Pazdan Smith Architects, also features locally reclaimed wood and is decorated with artwork from local artists. “It’s all geared toward our clients’ experience and connecting us with our community and the people we take care of,” says Dr. Aiken.
