Beaufort Bridge Multibeam and Side Scan Sonar Survey

The post-construction evaluation of the NCDOT Highway 70 Beaufort Bypass project included the areas of both the former drawbridge and the new bridge. The purpose of the project was to locate and identify underwater objects that could create obstructions for boats.

McKim & Creed conducted a multibeam and a side scan sonar surveys using an R2 Sonic 2022 multibeam echosounder and an Edgetech 4125 side scan sonar. On the day the survey was taking place, a contractor was working in the area to retrieve underwater objects caused by the bridge demolition. McKim & Creed surveyors worked in concert with the contractor to shift barges so the entire area could be surveyed without leaving any gaps.

After processing and analyzing the data, McKim & Creed mapped the soundings and produced a full report showing the underwater objects encountered during the survey. The client used to survey to find and remove those objects.
