Fayetteville Public Works Commission is the only municipal utility company in North Carolina to own and operate a power plant. The Butler-Warner Generation Plant (BWGP) was originally built to protect PWC customers from incurring high peaking power costs. In 2019, PWC built North Carolina’s first municipal Community Solar/Battery Storage Project which is located adjacent to the plant. The solar project can generate up to 1 MW of energy and BWGP controls the charging and discharging of the stored energy/battery based on likelihood of DEP system peak.
The Fayetteville Public Works Commission Butler-Warner Solar Project is a significant initiative aimed at advancing renewable energy efforts in Fayetteville, N.C. McKim & Creed has provided essential surveying services under an on-call contract for several solar sites throughout the area. These services include boundary and topographic surveys, and as-built surveys to ensure that the solar projects adhere to design specifications and regulatory requirements. McKim & Creed also provided collection and processing of lidar and imagery using an unmanned aerial system (UAS).
This project is part of Fayetteville Public Works Commission’s broader strategy to develop solar photovoltaic generating stations across its electrical grid, supporting the transition to sustainable energy sources. The project is ongoing, with McKim & Creed playing a crucial role in delivering accurate and timely surveying support to facilitate the successful planning and execution of these solar energy projects.
