Catawba River Water Main Horizontal Directional Drill

Horizontal directional drill was used to successfully install 1,000 LF of 30-inch water main under the Catawba River in this award-winning project. The installation was part of York County, SC’s new regionalized water system, which meets current and future water demands, reduces dependence on other utilities, and provides system redundancy. Using HDD eliminated the need for unsightly utility bridge infrastructure and preserved a pristine environment. The installation stayed well within the required design tolerances, exiting just three feet short and two feet to the left of the designed exit point, and was completed within the seven-week timeframe and $330,957 (9.4%) under budget.
