The award-winning Avenue North Channel Restoration project addressed severe erosion caused by uncontrolled stormwater discharges within a large mixed-use redevelopment in Fairfax. The project included channel restoration, bank stabilization, and innovative stormwater outfall structures designed to prevent erosion, protect habitat and tree canopy, and improve downstream water quality.
As part of the 79-acre, 1.84-million-square-foot redevelopment of the former AstraZeneca North Campus, McKim & Creed (formerly Landmark Science & Engineering) developed a sustainable solution to stabilize an existing drainage channel receiving high-volume stormwater flows. Improvements reduced risks to public and private infrastructure while enhancing the visual and environmental quality of the site.
Services included water resources engineering, floodplain analysis, environmental permitting, civil design, landscape architecture, surveying, and construction support. The completed restoration now serves as a resilient and visually striking feature of the Avenue North development.
