McKim & Creed’s Wet Weather Program is supporting the City of Columbia (South Carolina) through a multi-year Continuing Sewer Assessment Program focused on evaluating sewer system conditions, improving asset information and identifying issues that require corrective action.
Services under the contract include Level 2 MACP manhole inspections; cleaning and CCTV inspection of sewer mainlines; lateral cleaning and CCTV inspection using lateral launch technology; smoke testing; dye testing; and other investigative services as needed. To date, efforts have focused primarily on mainline cleaning and CCTV, lateral inspections and manhole inspections.
The information collected through these assessments is helping the City improve the accuracy and completeness of its GIS data while building a valuable visual record of its sewer infrastructure. Historical photographs and verified location information have been particularly useful in locating buried or difficult-to-find manholes and improving the City’s understanding of its assets.
The program also provides the City with timely information about significant system defects. McKim & Creed reports critical findings, such as collapsed pipes and blockages, in near real time, allowing City staff to quickly evaluate conditions and take corrective action when needed. Together, these efforts are giving the City better information to support maintenance decisions, prioritize repairs and proactively manage its wastewater collection system.
