Sunset Lake Stormwater Outfall Remediation and Bank Stabilization

The SIEMENS’ Stormwater Outfall Remediation and Bank Stabilization project in Delaware addressed severe erosion and sedimentation issues caused by stormwater discharges from three degraded outfalls adjacent to Siemens’ 100 GBC Drive property. The primary objective was to prevent sediment from entering Sunset Lake and to stabilize the banks and shoreline, thereby improving water quality.

McKim & Creed (formerly Landmark Science & Engineering) provided comprehensive services, including environmental permitting through state and federal agencies, civil engineering site design, landscape architecture, land surveying, wetland delineation, and construction review. The project featured the installation of three stormwater management facilities utilizing gabion baskets and mattresses, articulating cascading weirs, dual-discharge headwalls with inverted V-notch weirs, and energy dissipation chutes. A reforestation plan was implemented to restore native vegetation and naturalize the area.

The project required a Nationwide Permit 13 from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and coordination with New Castle County’s Department of Land Use. The stormwater management solutions were designed to slow water velocity, dissipate energy, and reduce erosion and sedimentation into Sunset Lake, a recreational resource dating back to around 1900. The project was recognized with the ACEC Delaware Engineering Excellence Conceptor Award for its innovative approach and positive environmental impact.
