To aid with current and anticipated growth, the Town of Mint Hill (North Carolina) invested in public safety and infrastructure by developing new public services facilities at one location. The new 18-acre complex will house the public services headquarters; maintenance, equipment, and material storage; a two-bay fire station; a regional fire with training facility; a fuel depot; and police department support space for evidence storage. The improvements also include:
- A left turn lane on Lebanon Road (where the facility is located).
- A site for a future playground near the fire station.
- A creek crossing.
- Required parking and circulation around the site.
McKim & Creed’s team of engineers assisted in this design-build effort by providing schematic design, design development assistance, final construction planning, implementation of a left-turn lane, permitting, and on-call/construction administration services. Challenges included the superelevation of two reverse curves required for the roadway improvements (left turn lane) and a pump station with a force main.
“The benefits to Mint Hill citizens and businesses generated by this project cannot be totally measured but will continue to benefit both for generations to come,” Mint Hill Mayor Brad Simmons said. “Safety of our citizens is priority one, and this project checks that box in so many ways.”
In November 2023, the Town of Mint Hill hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new public works facilities.
