UNC Chapel Hill Kenan Science and Technology Lab

The $21-million renovation of UNC Chapel Hill’s Kenan Laboratories transformed the 50-year-old 130,000 SF facility into an energy-efficient, state-of-the-art science and technology lab that accommodates the specialized needs of 21st century research. The project began as a mechanical controls and fi re-sprinkler system project but morphed into a complete renovation that leveraged cost and time savings when compared with completing multiple individual projects over a 3-5-year period. The renovation featured fire safety innovations (including fire command center), exhaust and air handling systems, flexible workspaces and room for expansion. McKim & Creed provided complete MEPSFP services.

Kenan Labs serves as research space for more than 1,000 science and technology students and research associates at UNC Chapel Hill. This project was awarded a 2022 Engineering Excellence Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina.
