The $21-million renovation of UNC Chapel Hill’s Kenan Laboratories transformed the 50-year-old 130,000 SF facility into an energy-efficient, state-of-the-art science and technology lab that accommodates the specialized needs of 21st century research. The project began as a mechanical controls and fire-sprinkler system project but morphed into a complete renovation that leveraged cost and time savings when compared with completing multiple individual projects over a 3-5-year period.
The renovation featured fire safety innovations (including fire command center), exhaust and air handling systems, flexible workspaces and room for expansion. McKim & Creed provided complete mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural and fire protection (MEPSFP) services.
Kenan Labs serves as research space for more than 1,000 science and technology students and research associates at UNC Chapel Hill. This project was awarded a 2022 Engineering Excellence Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina.
