UNC Charlotte’s University Recreation Center, dubbed UREC, opened January 8, 2020. The 148,000-SF, $66-million state-of-the-art facility is the Niner Nation’s only building devoted solely to health and wellness.
UREC merges classroom space with fitness facilities. These facilities include yoga/Pilates studios, spinning rooms, basketball and volleyball courts, weight rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, and administrative offices.
UREC was designed for Green Globe sustainability certification. McKim & Creed played a significant role by employing highly energy-efficient building systems design strategies.
LEDs provide low-energy, adjustable, multi-zone lighting. Glass walls allow natural light to stream. This reduces the need for artificial lighting levels. It also lowers power consumption and maintains illumination quality. Energy from rejected heat generated by de-humidification units heats the pool and reduces natural gas usage. Intelligent building controls heat and cool UREC while optimizing energy efficiency. Water-saving plumbing fixtures cut water usage. And energy-efficient water heating units meet the demand for this large building.
