Each spring, the City of Durham implements a temporary water disinfection changeover program. This precautionary measure ensures the City’s water distribution system is appropriately maintained. Past changeovers required twelve staff members flushing fire hydrants randomly and working excessive overtime for four weeks. In 2019 the City and McKim & Creed utilized the City’s hydraulic model to select hydrants based on model-predicted water age to better manage resources. The resulting water age abatement plan reduced changeover water usage by 25%, reduced staff required to implement the plan by 75%, slashed overtime by 92% and cut overall costs by 21%.
