A water authority in New York replaced a custom but difficult-to-use computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) with a new CMMS that was tied into a GIS. The authority also implemented a mobile work management system so that O&M staff could enter data themselves while in the field. The new system streamlined the number of people required to complete work orders, produced better-quality data and created a system of accountability. It also made it possible to generate heat maps to pinpoint the biggest clusters of breaking water mains within the distribution system.
