Hello, everyone. I’m Tommy Lai from Taiwan. I was an intern for eight weeks with McKim & Creed through N.C. State’s Global Training Institute. I’d like to share the experience with you guys.
Professionally, I have gained more information and knowledge about the civil engineering and construction industries and how the American government builds its infrastructure for their citizens. Furthermore, I know how to write a great proposal to the government or other companies to win contracts for the company.
I learned a lot about the culture in the United States and how small talk is very important in the office culture. No matter in the office or the daily life, small talk is common and a necessary skill here. It is the best way to show your concern to others and build rapport with new people.
I learned that there are a lot of different campaigns and activities in McKim & Creed. For example, stream clean-up, social parties, MS foundation bicycle activity, etc. The purpose of these activities is to build relationships between people. These relationships will facilitate growing business revenue as well. I’m very appreciative that I had this perfect internship experience at McKim & Creed. Mr. Rick Prosser and Mr. Chris Nelson and so many others taught me a lot. Thanks to everyone who assisted and taught me. Everyone was hospitable and friendly in the working environment. This was a precious experience for me.
Outside of the office, I’ve been to Hanging Rock State Park to see stunning scenery I’ve never seen before. It was awesome. And also, we went to Smoky Mountain National Park to go hiking and see wild animals. In addition, I visited Old Salem Museums & Gardens to see the 17th and 18th centuries of Southern life and history, which was an excellent experience. In the eastern part of North Carolina, I went to Wilmington to have an authentic Southern cuisine called shrimp and grits, which was so tasty. After that, we went to Wrightsville Beach, which was a beautiful beach. It was quiet and good for relaxing on the beach for a vacation. I really love this place.
All in all, this internship was called The Adventures of Tommy Lai, which was a perfect internship experience for me in North Carolina. I won’t forget the things I’ve experienced and the people I’ve met here forever.
