Carolina Water Service Clamps Down on Non-Revenue Water

Carolina Water Service of North Carolina (CWSNC) chased down and stopped over 92 million gallons in annual water leaks with the help of McKim & Creed. This past spring, we led a non-revenue water loss investigation in our western North Carolina service area. McKim & Creed was contracted to provide five weeks of leak detection in four service areas – Sapphire Valley, Bear Paw, Gastonia (Forestbrook, Holly Acres, Beechbrook, Westwood Forest, College Park, Saddlewood, Suburban Heights, Olde Lamp), and Watauga County (Misty Mountain, Ski Mountain).

During the five-week investigation, McKim & Creed covered about 55 miles, using sounding equipment on over 2,140 assets. This effort resulted in the identification and repair of 27 distribution system leaks and 25 service line leaks.

According to Don Denton, President of CWSNC, “The additional effort and investment it took to investigate the leaks will provide an immediate return. We expect to save approximately $180,000 a year in water production costs. I commend the efforts of our operations team for focusing on reducing non-revenue water. Their efforts will benefit the business, lower costs for customers, and will also protect our local water resources.”

The leak investigation by McKim & Creed was an investment of about $37,000.
