National & State Awards Received for Beach Profile Survey

McKim & Creed and The New York District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers received a National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies and a Grand Engineering Excellence Award from the organization’s state chapter, ACEC/NC.

In the surveying and mapping category, McKim & Creed and the New York District were honored for a beach profile and groin survey along four miles of New Jersey beach that were devastated by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. McKim & Creed mapped 145 beach profiles and performed detailed topographic surveys above and below the water surface for 29 stone groins and revetments, using a combination of conventional, hydrographic and airborne LiDAR techniques. This project supports the repair and restoration of the largest beachfill project ever, by volume, and helps the New York District return the beaches to their pre-storm condition and restore them to their full, original design level of protection. This, in turn, provides more sand to the affected areas and makes these communities less vulnerable to future storm events.

The engineering excellence awards program is an annual competition that honors and recognizes engineering and surveying firms for projects that demonstrate the highest degree of achievement, value and ingenuity.
