Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter

3-D laser scanning and modeling helped engineers program ride vehicles at the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando. The laser scans and models prepared by McKim & Creed were also used to check ride vehicle clearance envelopes. Before incorporating 3-D laser scanning and computer-generated programming, ride engineers had to manually move each of the 48 ride vehicle through each scene to coordinate vehicle movement and scene encroachment. For another client, JMR Surveying (prior to joining forces with McKim & Creed) scanned the one-inch-scale fiberglass model of the mountain upon which the castle sits. Technicians then created a model from the scan data, enlarged it to full size and aligned it with the engineering plans.
